What is a mole?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

A common mole, or melanocytic<\/a> naevi, is a coloured<\/a> spot on the skin that develops<\/a> when pigment<\/a> cells called melanocytes<\/a> grow in clusters<\/a>. Although<\/a> common moles may be present<\/a> at birth, they appear later in childhood<\/a> and increase<\/a> during teenage<\/a> years \u2013 most adults usually<\/a> have between<\/a> 10 and 40 on their body. During pregnancy, moles often get darker and they can fade away completely<\/a> from around the age of 50.<\/p>\n

Most suitable<\/a> for small, raised moles in areas where scarring<\/a> is a priority, such as the face. Laser mole removal<\/a> uses light energy to break down the melanin<\/a> pigment<\/a> within the mole.<\/p>\n

How to best look after your moles <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Sun exposure<\/a> is the main cause of skin cancers, so protecting<\/a> your skin from the sun is crucial<\/a> for skin health. Experts<\/a> advise to avoid direct sun exposure<\/a> between<\/a> 11am and 3pm on sunny days, and to wear protective<\/a> clothing<\/a> in addition<\/a> to using sunscreen<\/a> .<\/span><\/p>\n

When moles are excised<\/a> they will not recur.<\/p>\n

If moles are removed<\/a> by shave or laser There is a very small chance that your mole might reappear<\/a> after having it removed, as a few mole cells may remain in the skin. If this is the case, we will book you in for further<\/a> treatment<\/a>. Usually, however, you will find that one treatment<\/a> session<\/a> is enough.<\/p>\n

The British<\/a> Association<\/a> of Dermatologists<\/a> defines<\/a> Atypical<\/a> mole syndrome<\/a> as “a disorder of the skin which is seen in approximately 2% of the population.
